The easiest way to ruin a Gamescom demo is treating it like a normal campaign session. You get a short queue window, a strange character setup, and usually no time to repair a bad passive choice. I would not burn every spare orb chasing a show-ready build beforehand; a modest stock of Path of Exile 2 Currency is more useful for testing an idea quickly, replacing a failed weapon, or reacting to balance notes. The show matters because a hands-on build tells us far more about friction than a polished trailer: animation locks, flask uptime, boss readability, and whether melee gets punished for stopping.

Gamescom 2026 in Cologne is expected to have a show-only playable demo, darker display setups, and the usual exclusive merch bait. The merch is fun if you are already there, but the demo is the real prize. Players should pay attention to what GGG lets people play repeatedly, not just the flashy encounter used for screenshots. That usually hints at the systems the team wants stress-tested before the next major patch and the run toward 1.0 later in 2026.

What I would test before queuing for the demo

Patch 0.5.4 gives players useful homework. The Runes Atlas tree is the obvious place to start because it changes how you think about map investment and reward targeting. Do not just click the nodes with the biggest numbers. Run a few small farming sessions, track how often your chosen mechanic actually appears, then compare the return against the currency and time spent rolling maps. A tree that feels great in ten maps can be a trap over fifty.

My short prep list would look like this.

1. Practice one boss opener instead of copying a full streamer setup.

2. Keep a second weapon set for testing clear and single-target separately.

3. Do not judge new uniques before checking their level-scaling breakpoints.

Level-scaling uniques are especially easy to misread. A unique can look insane while leveling, then lose its edge once rare bases, sockets, and affix tiers catch up. Test them where they are meant to be used. If a unique saves passive points or solves resistances, it may remain valuable; if it only adds a little damage, selling it early can fund a much cleaner upgrade path.

Build rumors are less useful than build questions

Minion and autobomber variants have been getting attention because they reduce some of PoE 2's aiming and positioning tax, but neither archetype is automatically cheap. Minions can demand gear slots to keep defenses, speed, and damage together. Autobombers often feel excellent in open maps yet become awkward when a rare monster survives the first chain. Watch for cooldown recovery, resource sustain, and damage delay during any Gamescom footage. Those details matter more than a highlight clip deleting one pack.

For players planning around the event, keep your liquid currency flexible rather than pre-buying every rumored item. Patch notes can turn a bargain into dead weight overnight. If you need a basic crafting step before testing a new setup, you can buy POE 2 Orb of Alchemy without committing your whole stash to speculation, then save the rest for the upgrades that survive the actual numbers.
